Fairview High School > Scott Peoples's IB History of the Americas
Welcome to Scott Peoples' IB History of the Americas class page!

IB History of the Americas utilizes a “case study” approach to examine historical topics and techniques applicable to three distinct periods in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Each of these case studies will take place over approximately one trimester (10-12 weeks); this year, the topics studied will consist of European Explorations and Conquests, 1492-1600; Emergence of the Americas in Global Affairs, 1880-1929; and The Americas, 1980-2005. The intent of this class is to prepare IB Diploma candidates for the HL Exams in History, but non-IB students who are interested in the subject matter and are not averse to a heavy reading load and doing in-depth research and thinking are enthusiastically invited to take on the challenge. The course is focused on writing and historical analysis, and will utilize a variety of assessments including an in-depth Internal Assessment research paper. (continued)

Conquest of Granada video

We didn't watch it in class, but this video provides a good overview of the stuff you'll want to know for IB Paper 1, Subject 3, Case Study 1:

Isabella of Spain and the Reconquest of Granada

And here's the one we did watch on the Inquisition (you can look up Mel Brooks' take on your own):

The Hunt for Heretics: The Spanish Inquisition

The Storm That Swept Mexico

It doesn't cover everything - the Christero Rebellion is rather glaringly missing, and there's not much about Pershing's expedition - but this is a pretty good summary of the very-complicated Mexican Revolution. Behold!:

Cities of Light

We only watched the last half-hour or so of this 2-hour documentary. If you're interested in the early part of the Muslims-in-Spain story...
