Read the article "From Beckett to Stoppard" and answer the questions under Files titled RAGAD.

Look up in your files the Written Assignment comparing two world literature texts from last year and the reflections on the discussions about the IOP. You will need to take some time between now and the end of February to revise these assignments and turn them in to IB. They are worth 25% of your total IB LA grade, so they are very important!

You will work with a group of 4-5 people, and focus on one poem of Derek Walcott. You will create a presentation on the poem, including a visual, either on computer or overhead or butcher paper, to share with the class. On the presentation, you will read the poem, explicate for literary devices, and create a commentary on the poem looking for overall meaning, classical or literary allusions, sound devices, and thematic connections to Walcott's life. The presenations should be 10 minutes maximum.

Please create your timelineon a piece of white construction paper. Just draw a central line, and after creating a list of all the significant events that have happened in your life so far, then place them as dots above the timeline if they are positive, and below the timeline is they are negative, and then you can join the dots going from birth to present. You can place the very positive ones the highest on the page, and the most negative ones the lowest on the page. There is no requirement as to number of events, just mark the moments that are important to you, like moving, good or bad experiences with friends, losses of family members or pets, getting jobs, winning or losing a competition in sports, music, theater, or whatever activities are important to you.

This essay will be helpful in focusing you on how and why we write personal essays. Please read the article under Files: Nonfiction Essays, and write down in your journal five of the most important ideas you find in the article.

Read and reflect on the IB Learner Profile, and create a short document describing where you see yourself on a scale of 1-10 for the various qualities of an IB Learner. Turn in on Friday.

TAke your time from 4/22 to 4/27 to think about AMFAS and the other plays we have read this semester, and write a comparison essay using one of the IB Prompts I will give you.

You will be creating a chart with the three plays we have read so far this semester: RAGAD, WFG, and TIBE. You will compare these plays using several different ideas so that you can use this chart to study for your IB Paper 2 in May.

Answer the specific Waiting for Godot questions on the web page under Waiting for Godot, or use the reader response questions you answered for RAGAD.

Come to class on Tuesday with an insightful question or comment comparing or addressing the two plays - written down.

Each student will present their artistic expression of Heart of Darkness by reading the passage you chose or explaining the theme or motif you are referring to, then presenting your artistic expression to the class.

Mencken's review of HOD on pp. xxi-xxxiii, Lionel Trilling's review on pp.xli-xliv in the preface, and Chinua Achebe's review on pp.xlv-lii in the preface. While reading these reviews underline or highlight the words, phrases, sentences or passages that you think are the most powerful statements about the Heart of Darkness. Compare where these three critics are writing from and why they admire or despise Conrad's writing in this novel.

You will come to class with three passages already annotated and outlined in preparation for your oral commentary. You will be set up with a partner, and for the first 8 minutes, you will give an oral commentary on one of the three passages which Mrs. Brennan will assign. Then the listener will ask two minutes of follow up questions. Then you will have an open-ended discussion of the whole play of Hamlet with guided questions from the listener. That should take 20 minutes, then we will reverse the procedure, so the listener will do their commentary, answer questions, then continue with a discussion for the next 20 minutes. You will be graded on your annotations, your outline, and your responses to your partner on the back of the rubric.

The first acting troupe will present Act I in a 30 minute version with costumes and props.

You will choose one significant passage in HOD, and create an artistic project depicting that passage to be displayed in the classroom or hallway. The project can be in the form of art, music, dance, theater, or any other artistic form. Start on these well ahead!

Continue to practice oral-commentary-style analyses on our works, as well as reviewing works from earlier in first semester in preparation for the IB Orals in early January.

Please come form an orderly line to sign up for your very own time for your oral exam next week. Try to choose a time that falls during English class or during an open period to avoid conflicts with other classes. Your exam will take 50 minutes, 20 minutes of preparation time and 15 minutes of actual exam with 5 minutes for shifting between rooms. They will all take place in the library editing suite on the right hand side of the library.

Annotate your poetry packets for all of the thematic and stylistic aspects of poetry, as we've reviewed in class.

Read all of the poems by Walcott in your packet. We will form into groups to cover these poems on Tuesday through Thursday.
